The United States has welcomed the "historic" adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797 on Moroccan Sahara, reaffirming that Morocco's Autonomy Initiative is "the only basis" for achieving a just and lasting solution to this regional dispute.
Speaking on Friday before the members of the Council following the vote on Resolution 2797, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz stressed that his country urges "all parties to engage in serious discussions using Morocco’s credible and realistic Autonomy Proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution" to the long overdue dispute.
Highlighting President Donald Trump’s "resolute support" for peace efforts, the American diplomat underscored the United States’ "deep commitment" to resolving the long-standing regional issue on the Moroccan Sahara.
This is an achievable goal "this year," said Waltz, who was joined at the Security Council session by the new U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan, affirming that the U.S. would spare no effort to "facilitate progress" toward this shared goal of peace and prosperity in the region.
Waltz also commended the efforts of Personal Envoy de Mistura as well as those of the United Nations, aimed at ushering in "a new era of peace and prosperity for the region."
