Marriage

Marriage in the Southern Sahraoui Provinces is marked by some peculiar habits and rituals which distinguish it from the other marriage traditions in the other Moroccan cities and regions.

When a young Sahraoui man decides to get married, he informs his family, especially his mother who undertakes to inform his father, for it is unseemly, in the eyes of the Sahraouis, for a young man to directly inform his father of his matrimonial intentions. A Sahraoui father is expected to receive “the glad tidings” of his son’s intentions, through the mediation of one of the family members or one of his close friends.
