Autonomy does not mean dividing a country, Spanish local official

Autonomy does not mean dividing a country, but rather decentralizing and bringing power closer to citizens for more efficiency in promoting citizens' life style, said visiting president of the Spanish northern autonomous community of La Rioja, Pedro Sanz.

In a statement to the press following a meeting he held here Wednesday with the minister of Foreign affairs and cooperation, Taieb Fassi Fihri, Sanz hailed efforts exerted by Morocco to get closer to Europe and become its strategic point in Africa. "These efforts are opening positive horizons", he said.

The Spanish official who said his talks with Fassi Fihri touched on issues related to the region explained that his visit to Morocco aims to foster partnership and cooperation relations between Morocco and Spain by consolidating commercial, institutional and entrepreneurial exchanges between Morocco and La Rioja.

For his part, Taieb Fassi Fihri said the talks he held with the president of La Rioja follow the contacts that were made these past years and that were encouraged by king Mohammed VI, with different Spanish autonomous communities such as Andalusia, the Canary Islands and Catalonia.

This visit provides an opportunity to discuss issues which fall within the competence of autonomous communities, especially on economic, commercial and technological levels, said Fassi Fihri.

Pedro Sanz is leading a delegation of Spanish businessmen representing 14 enterprises operating in the sectors of food processing, energy and agricultural equipment.
