Autonomy proposal is a possible solution to settle the Sahara issue (Senior US official)

"Morocco has proposed constructive ideas. We consider the autonomy proposal a possible solution" to settle the Sahara issue, said Monday in Rabat, US. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman.

The United States continue to support the UN process to settle the Sahara issue, said Feltman, during a joint press briefing with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Taib Fassi Fihri, reaffirming the support of his country to the efforts of the Personal Envoy of UN Secretary General for the Sahara, Christopher Ross.

The U.S. official also points out that a lasting and mutually acceptable solution to this question will help prevent the threat of terrorism, transnational crime and drug trafficking in the region.

In addition, Mr. Feltman commended Morocco on its election as a nonpermanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations for a term of two years, expressing his conviction that the Kingdom will play "a leading, constructive and positive role "in this international forum.

The United States, he added, are willing to work closely and constructively with Morocco in the Security Council on the various challenges facing the world.

The US. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs stressed, on the other hand, the depth of friendship and long-standing relations between Morocco and the United States, noting that both countries work to further strengthen their relations in the various fields.

Mr. Feltman, who described as "constructive" talks with Mr Fassi Fihri, said he discussed with the Moroccan Minister several issues of common interest, including the latest developments in the Arab region, in particular the situation in Libya and Syria.
